National Volunteer Month 2022

April is National Volunteer Month. At TCC, we’re proud of our focus year-round on giving back to our local communities. We’re using this month as an opportunity to highlight some of the ways our employees have volunteered this year!

Teachers Rock

We kicked off the year with our Teachers Rock Community Event, which was also the start of our #10DaysofGiving. For Teachers Rock, all of our stores chose a school to deliver a care package filled with supplies and goodies to show our appreciation. We also put 20 golden tickets in these care packages that each contained a $1,000 Amazon gift card.

National Pet Day Volunteering

On our 4th #10DaysofGiving event, teams from each sales region volunteered at a local animal rescue organization around National Pet Day (April 11). We also had some teams partner with a local shelter and host in-store pet adoption events!

Paid Volunteer Hours

Every employee gets 16 paid volunteer hours per year. Some employees have already taken advantage of this opportunity and set up events with their teams:

East IN leaders presented Greensburg Bread of Life with a TCC Gives Community Grant to help them feed more members of their community. They also prepared over 650 turkey dinners for their annual turkey dinner drive-thru event.

Some leaders from Illinois and Iowa got together at the St. Louis Area Foodbank. In two hours, they packed over 7,000 meals and processed nearly 9,000 pounds (4.4 tons!) of food.

The Southeast PA sales region volunteered at Life Path Christian Ministries, an organization that helps people get back on their feet during times of need. They provided a place to sleep for 100,000 people in the York, PA area last year. They run almost entirely on donations. The SEPA team spent their time organizing food and personal items and serving lunch.

At our Baltimore sales summit, leaders from the NJ Tri, DE/MD/VA, and Southeast PA sales regions put together packs for the homeless and went out to deliver them.

Other employees did good on their own from the kindness of their heart without a set event:

Remington Wheaton was one of the winners of the Northern IL/WI sneaker contest. The winners got $1,000 worth of shoes. Since he’s not a big shoe person, he bought a pair of $300 cowboy boots. He asked for the remaining amount on a gift card which he used to purchase backpacks filled with necessities that he dropped off to a homeless tent camp in Chicago on Christmas Eve.

At the AL/LA/FL leadership summit, Kayla Chambers witnessed a homeless person rummaging for scraps in garbage cans along the sidewalk. She collected a few items to help this stranger. While a lot of people may have ignored this person, Kayla’s action showed a lot about her great character.

Grand Opening Donations

Whenever we celebrate a new store opening, a relocation, or a remodel, we have that local store team choose a nonprofit and donate either $1,500 (new stores) or $1,000 (relocated and remodeled stores) to their organization. Most of these teams choose organizations that their staff already have an existing relationship with, or it’s a great start to a future partnership.

So far this year, we have donated to the Flagstaff Biking Organization (chosen by the Flagstaff, AZ store), the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Eufaula (chosen by the Eufaula, AL store), the Chenango SPCA (chosen by the Norwich, NY store), Oak Park Festival Theatre (chosen by the River Forest, IL store), the JR Kickz Foundation (chosen by the Philadelphia, PA – Snyder Ave store), and Calvert Tide Inc. (chosen by the Lusby, MD store).

School Rocks Backpack Giveaway

We’re looking forward to our biggest volunteer event of the year: our 10th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. All stores will be giving away free backpacks filled with school supplies to students on Sunday, July 31 from 1-4 PM.

We have so many more ways that we volunteer and give back to local communities throughout the year. Read all about them here.
