At Tuesday’s Apple keynote, the newest versions of the beloved iPhone were unveiled. Here’s what you need to know.
The iPhone 8 has a new all-glass design. But what exactly is so exciting about this? With durable glass on the back, (Apple’s website boasts that this is the most durable glass on a smartphone ever) you’re able to completely eliminate cords. That’s right -wireless charging. Instead of fiddling around with cables, you can now just set your iPhone down on a wireless charging pad placed anywhere in your house.
The Retina HD display has been vamped up with True Tone technology. This automatically adjusts white balance to the light around you for the best viewing experience possible.
The iPhone’s camera has quickly become a favorite way to capture our daily lives. This time it’s even better. You can now even use the 8’s camera for immersive augmented reality experiences. You need the iPhone 8 Plus to see the camera’s capabilities at its fullest. The Plus has dual cameras that enable portrait mode, a feature made popular with the 7 Plus. It takes professional-looking photos with the subject crisp in the foreground and a blurred background. Now, Apple just announced Portrait Lighting, a feature that is going to change your Instagram game forever. It uses facial detection and depth maps allowing you to take portraits and alter the way the light hits your subject’s face in real-time.

But wait! There’s one more thing.
While the iPhone 8 is fairly similar to its previous companions, just by looking at the X, you can tell it’s different. The circular home button has been entirely removed to make room for more screen. Minimized bezels on all sides allow the screen to wrap around the front camera to the very top of your phone.
But how are you going to unlock your phone with no button?! You can unlock it by tapping on the screen and it will use facial recognition to unlock. With Face ID, your face is literally your password that can unlock your phone, authenticate, and be used with Apple Pay. Less buttons mean you navigate your phone with swipes and taps for a more intuitive experience.
You’ll have to wait a bit longer to get the iPhone X; pre-orders begin on October 27 and shipping begins November 3.
